BEIJING - Computer manufacturer Hewlett-Packard will recall 78,740 laptop batteries used in HP- and Compaq-series laptops sold in China due to a potential fire risk, the country's product quality watchdog said Thursday.
The batteries in question, produced by LG Electronics between July 2007 and May 2008, have a flaw that may cause the batteries to overheat and melt, which could result in fires, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) said in an online statement.

BEIJING, June 2 (Xinhua) -- Lenovo Group Ltd., China's biggest maker of personal computer, aimed to buy control of Medion AG, a multimedia and consumer electronics maker, to double its market share in Germany, the China Daily reported Thursday.
The purchase will be Lenovo's biggest acquisition since it acquired International Business Machines Corp's PC business in 2004.
Lenovo estimated that after the acquisition, it will be the third-largest PC company in Germany, which is Europe's largest PC market. Lenovo will have more than 14 percent of the German and 7.5 percent of the Western European PC market, the newspaper said.

SAN FRANCISCO – Google Inc. is hoping other websites will like its recently introduced system for recommending online content and ads.
The Internet search leader has been using a "+1" recommendation button on its own site for two months. It became available to other publishers Wednesday.
The +1 feature is similar to the Facebook "Like" button that has become a staple at thousands of websites.
Pressing the +1 or Like button enables people to recommend an article, photo, product, video, song or some other kind of material to their online connections.

RANCHO PALOS VERDES, California – Nokia chief executive Stephen Elop on Wednesday dismissed as "baseless" a report that Microsoft had agreed to purchase the Finnish company's mobile business.
"There are absolutely no discussions," Elop said at the D9 technology conference here hosted by All Things Digital. "The rumors are baseless."
The website Boy Genius, or BGR.com, reported on Wednesday that according to industry insider Eldar Murtazin, Microsoft has struck a deal to buy Nokia's mobile phone business for $19 billion.

SEOUL, June 2 (Xinhua) -- Solar cell business is one of the five areas that South Korea's No.1 conglomerate Samsung Group has planned to nurture as new growth engines.
Samsung announced in May last year it will inject 23.3 trillion won (21.69 billion U.S. dollars) by 2020 into new growth drivers such as electric vehicle batteries, light-emitting diode (LED), biomedicine and medical equipment as well as solar batteries.
Samsung Electronics' LCD business unit has been tasked with producing solar cells and modules since 2009, but the unit failed to pay off in the past two years, resulting in rumors that Samsung is reassessing its solar energy business.
